What is a Certified Patient Experience Professional (CPXP)?

A CPXP is a person who influences the systems, processes, and behaviors that cultivate positive experiences across the continuum of care.

The CPXP certification is a globally recognized designation for individuals committed to championing excellence in healthcare experience. It signifies a strong dedication to maintaining essential skills and knowledge as well as an unwavering commitment to advancing the field of patient experience and transforming the human experience in healthcare. 

The CPXP designation is achieved by completing and passing the online CPXP examination.

CPXP Exam Structure 

The CPXP exam consists of 150 questions and is administered online, either at a testing center or through live online proctoring. Candidates have three hours to complete the exam, which is based on the CPXP classification system detailed in the CPXP Handbook. This system is currently organized in four key domains:

  • Partnership and Advocacy
  • Measurement and Analysis
  • Design and Innovation
  • Organizational Culture and Leadership

Pricing

The application fee for the CPXP exam is $475, which includes a non-refundable processing and administration fee of $100.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should possess at least three years of professional experience in an experience-related role or have a background as a healthcare professional involved in patient experience efforts.

Experience should clearly demonstrate involvement in leading, managing, or actively participating in patient experience improvement initiatives.

Alternatively, applicants may qualify as consultants or patient and family advocates dedicated to experience excellence, with demonstrated engagement in advancing patient experience efforts.

Those without this experience must demonstrate the completion of 30 Patient Experience Continuing Education credits (PXEs). A full list of PXE qualifying activities can be found here.

The CPXP Handbook offers a comprehensive overview of the examination process, covering everything from application and examination details to results and recertification requirements. Applicants are required to thoroughly review the handbook prior to submitting an application and will be asked to acknowledge this as part of the application process.

CPXP Exam Preparation 

In alignment with credentialing standards for certification exams, The Beryl Institute Credentialing Center does not publish or provide preparation materials for the CPXP exam. However, to support the preparation process, the following guidance may be helpful as candidates consider their preparation strategy.

Knowledge and Competency Review. Candidates are encouraged to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the full CPXP Classification System, as outlined and detailed in the CPXP Handbook. Preparation should focus on applying concepts of effective practice across the CPXP domains, rather than memorizing specific resources, drawing on relevant learning experiences, professional practice, and aligned references.

Review Recommended References. A sample list of recommended references highlights some of the most frequently cited resources used in the development of the CPXP exam. While not exhaustive, these materials reflect the core content areas of the exam. Familiarity with these resources does not guarantee a passing score but can support effective preparation.

Participate in the CPXP Candidate LinkedIn Group. During each exam window, candidates are invited to join a CPXP Candidate LinkedIn Group to connect with peers, share insights, and form study groups. This resource is included in the application fee and becomes available upon approval.

Practice Exam. An online CPXP Practice Exam is available through our testing partner, Meazure Learning, for a $50 fee (separate from the CPXP exam fee). The practice exam includes 50 multiple-choice questions aligned to the four CPXP domains.

The practice exam is not intended to serve as a study guide, as it contains retired questions that are no longer used on the current exam. Instead, it provides candidates with the opportunity to become familiar with the testing environment and the types of questions they may encounter.

Understanding of the Testing Environment. Meazure Learning, our learning partner, offers a free online tutorial and demo test to help candidates become familiar with the computer-based testing environment. This resource can be accessed at any time through any computer with internet access. Candidates may access the tutorial and demo on Meazure Learning's website. The demo is not intended to be a review of the examination content. 

Exam Results

There may be up to a four-week period between closure of the testing window and notification of results. This allows for thorough validation and scoring, ensuring the highest quality standards for all participants. Exam score reports are delivered via email. 

We offer Digital Badging, allowing candidates to promote their CPXP certification on social media or share it online. 

Retaking the CPXP Exam

Candidates who do not pass the CPXP certification exam may retake the examination up to 12 months from the original examination date (i.e., next two exam windows). The re-examination fee is $325, and candidates must complete a re-examination application. The re-examination scheduling process is the same as the initial exam.

Before You Apply

Complete the following steps before submitting your CPXP exam registration:

Review the CPXP Handbook
Download and review the CPXP Handbook in full. Acknowledgment of the Handbook is required as part of the CPXP certification application process.

Verify Your Beryl Institute Profile
Log in to your Beryl Institute profile and confirm that the following information is complete and accurate:

  • Your first and last name exactly match your legal ID (this will be required on exam day)
  • Your mailing address is complete and current (required for exam scheduling)
  • Your resume/CV has been uploaded and clearly demonstrates experience leading, managing, or actively participating in patient experience improvement efforts.

Payment Information
Payment of $475 USD must be received before your application can be approved for exam scheduling.

How to Update Your Profile

1. Click the person icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
2. Select Access Your Account.
3. Click Edit My Profile on the left-hand menu.
4. Review and update your name and billing address.
5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Upload Files to upload your resume/CV.
6. Click Save.

Scheduling an Exam & Exam Locations

Meazure Learning will notify applicants via an email approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the start of the testing window. This email will provide a unique username, password, and the URL to access Meazure Learning’s online scheduling system. Applicants will use this system to select a testing session, based on seating availability, location, and test date. 

The CPXP examination is offered at secure testing centers or through Live Online Proctoring (LOP). Meazure Learning offers over 1,300 test center locations in more than 700 cities in 115 countries. See the list of testing locations. 

Submit Your Application

All applications are reviewed for eligibility. Approval decisions are typically made within 30 days of submission. Submission of an application does not guarantee approval to sit for the examination. Approval notifications will be sent to the email address associated with your Institute profile.

CPXP Recertification

Maintain Your CPXP Designation

CPXP Certification is valid for three years from passing the examination or completing the most recent renewal. 

  • April CPXP recipients must renew by April 30, three years from examination window.
  • October CPXP recipients must renew by October 30, three years from examination window.

To re-certify as a CPXP, professionals must complete 30 PXEs, which could include up to ten hours of relevant CEs (such as related CNE or CME approved courses) over a three-year period from the most recent certification date.

If fewer than 30 PXEs are completed, re-examination will be required to maintain CPXP certification. CPXPs will need to sit for the exam at the published fee and pass to retain their designation.  

Recertification Fees

CPXPs must complete the recertification registration and submit a recertification fee of $275 to maintain certification. A late fee will be applied to renewals submitted 30 days after the renewal deadline. 

  • A $50 late fee will be applied in addition to the renewal fee if renewal date is 30 days to six months after certification expiration.
  • A $100 late fee will be applied in addition to the renewal fee if expiration renewal date is six to 12 months after certification expiration.

If your CPXP designation has been expired for more than one year, you must submit a new CPXP exam application and successfully pass the CPXP certification exam to regain the designation. Current exam fees will apply.

Renewal notifications are sent beginning six months before your CPXP renewal date. To ensure a smooth renewal process, please confirm that all credits have been entered and that you have met the requirements listed above. Renewal windows remain open for one year after the renewal date, and applicable late fees may apply.
