Harm from Disrespect: the Neglected Preventable Harm

Patricia H. Folcarelli RN, MA, PhD, Vice President, Health Care Quality, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Lauge Sokol-Hessner, MD, Medical Director Health Care Quality, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Patients experience both physical and emotional harm. Preventable emotional harms are caused by the experience of disrespect. Leveraging systems for identifying, assessing and tracking preventable physical harm, the presenters will describe a novel approach to bring the same rigor to non-physical harms in order to help prevent future emotional harm. We also discuss the foundational elements that form the foundation supporting this Practice of Respect, and share strategies to build those institutional elements. This webinar will provide a roadmap for building towards a practice of respect that is transferable to other health care settings.
