Defining Patient Experience: A Critical Decision for Healthcare Organizations
Published July 2, 2016
There has been rapid expansion in the use of the term “patient experience”in the general healthcare vernacular and in the realm of both clinical practice and research. Despite this growing prevalence, the concept often remains loosely defined, with many references to “patient experience” offering minimal explanation beyond the term itself. This inconsistency has led to varied interpretations and applications in both academic and practical settings, creating challenges for establishing a unified understanding. Recognizing the need for greater clarity, this expanded version—reprinted from the Patient Experience Journal—delves into the current landscape of how patient experience is being defined and utilized. It examines the diverse ways the concept has been interpreted, highlights the gaps in its consistent application, and underscores the importance of refining its definition. The discussion is followed by an exploration of the implications for healthcare providers, researchers, and organizations seeking to meaningfully improve the experience of care from the patient’s perspective.
