Fostering Meaningful Conversations in Care

WMTY Day is recognized the first Tuesday of June annually.

WMTY Day is a global initiative dedicated to shifting care beyond clinical checklists toward conversations rooted in what really matters to each individual. It encourages health and social care professionals, caregivers, and community members to pause and ask open-ended questions like:

  • “What matters to you today?”
  • “What’s most important for you in this moment?”
  • “How can I help you feel safe, comfortable, or supported?”

By truly listening and acting—often through small gestures—we aim to bring more compassion, connection, and dignity into every interaction.

How to Participate

  • Choose someone—a patient, colleague, family member—and ask a “What matters to you?” question.
  • Give your full attention to their answer: observe both verbal and nonverbal cues.
  • Do what you can (big or small) to honor their response, or note how you’ll follow up.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s simply creating a space to be heard, acknowledged, and understood.

Why It Matters
Every conversation contributes to a culture of respect, empathy, and person-centered care. Over time, these small moments build trust, strengthen relationships, and help create systems that truly reflect what matters most to people.

Join the Movement Everyone is invited to engage—whether in clinical settings, community organizations, or everyday life. You can:

  • Commit to one or more “What matters to you?” conversations
  • Encourage your teams or networks to try it too
  • Share your experiences, lessons, or stories
  • Explore resources, tips, and inspiration via world

Together, we can keep bringing what matters into every moment of care.

What is WMTY Day All About?

Simple Steps, Profound Impact

ASK: Go beyond "What's the matter?" Ask open-ended questions like:

  • "What matters to you today?"
  • "What's most important for you to get out of this today, [this visit/stay]?"
  • "What can I do to help you feel comfortable/safe?"

LISTEN: Truly hear the answer. Pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues. Understand the meaning behind the words.

DO: Act on what you hear. This doesn't always mean grand gestures! Often, it's the small things that count.

Your WMTY Day Mission:
Just One Conversation!

  • Ask ONE patient, colleague, or person: "What matters to you today?"
  • Listen carefully to their response.
  • Do what you reasonably can to honor their request, or note it down for follow-up if needed.

It's that simple! One focused interaction.
