Designing & Implementing an Effective Hospital-Based Music Program

This session will describe Duke University Hospital’s journey to provide live music to patients, visitors and staff throughout the hospital and hospital-based clinics. The speaker, a professional musician and educator, will focus on why live music is an important patient satisfier in the hospital setting and how it can be implemented through a number of cost effective practices. Learning Objectives: Participants will learn how to identify appropriate resources to incorporate live music into the patient experience including one or more of the following options: Volunteers in public spaces Professionally trained musicians on units and bedside Public hospital-based concerts Music lesson opportunities for long term patients and staff retreats Participants will learn how to implement each option, with benefits and challenges of each option highlighted.
